There are only a few things that feel better than entering an air-conditioned room during the summers. Now, different types of air-conditioners are available in the market. However, you need to choose the one which fits your needs. One of the biggest and most expensive air-conditioning systems is the centralized AC, which is commonly used in offices and can cool a large hall or multiple rooms at a time. If your air conditioning requirement is for a single room, then you could opt for a windows AC or even a split-AC. This article would focus on what is split AC and window AC and how to choose between them?
Most of the time, when we talk of an AC, we generally talk about the window AC. It is one of the simplest forms of air-conditioner and is usually mounted on the windows or walls of the room. In a window AC, all the components that are required to cool the room are packed into a single casing and put into the room. This AC has a refrigeration unit that has a double shaft fan motor, and fans are mounted on both sides of this motor. One side is called the condenser side, and the other is called the evaporator side. The condenser side is on the backside of the window AC, and its purpose is to transfer heat to the environment outside the room. The evaporator side is on the front-facing side of the unit, and its purpose is to cool the room. An insulated wall separates these two sides from one another.
What is split AC is a common question that people ask when choosing a new AC. As the name suggests, an AC which has been split into two parts is called a split AC. The two parts are the indoor unit and the outdoor unit. The indoor unit is sleek and takes a lot less space than the outdoor and can be easily mounted on the walls. This unit contains the cooling coils to cool the air that is being circulated in the room, a filter to take care of dust particles, pollen, and other particulate matter and a blower. The outdoor unit is placed outside the rooms, and it contains the condenser coils, compressor, and the expansion coils. It is bulky and noisy.
Now that we know what is split AC. Let us see why people choose it over the window AC. The main reason that people opt for a split AC is that it is a lot quieter than the window ACs. As we know, the main component that helps with cooling is the compressor, which is noisy. A traditional window AC has the compressor in the same casing as the components used to circulate air in the room. This means that the AC is a bit noisy. In the case of a split-AC, the condenser is placed in the outdoor unit, which is mounted outside the room, and thus, we don’t get as much noise as the window AC. Another brilliant feature that is offered by a split AC is that you can connect multiple indoor units to a single outdoor unit to cool more than one room. If you opt for a window AC, then you would need two complete units to cool two rooms. This feature makes it a lot cheaper than the window unit in the long run, even if the initial cost of a split AC is higher than the window ACs.
Once you know what is split AC and what is window AC, you might be wondering which one to get for your house. There are a few things that you need to consider before choosing a particular AC type.
A split AC is an air conditioner where the components that circulate the air in the room and the components that are responsible for cooling the air are housed in different units. The indoor unit is put in the room, and the outdoor unit is placed outside.
A split AC takes a lot less space in the room as compared to window ACs. It is a lot quieter, and you can cool multiple rooms with a single outdoor unit if you get multiple indoor units.
Central air conditioning is found in offices, malls, and other large areas where cooling is required. It is also found in some homes but is extremely expensive as compared to the Window and Split AC.
Window ACs consume a lot more electricity as compared to the Split AC. To put it simply, a window AC with a 5-star rating consumes the same amount of energy as split AC with a 4-star rating, considering all other variables are identical.
Talking about the initial investment, a window AC is much cheaper than a split AC. However, in the long run, when you look at the electricity bills and servicing cost, the split AC would be much cheaper.
